IPL Auction 2023:
New records were set at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction with three most-expensive buys ever. England all-rounder Sam Curran and Australia all-rounder Cameron Green were picked for Rs 18.50 crore and Rs 17.50 crore respectively by Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. Sam Curran is now the costliest player ever to be sold in an IPL auction. On the other hand, England Test captain Ben Stokes was picked by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 16.25 crore, an amount with which he equalled the previous record holder Chris Morris. Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran got the highest-ever price for a West Indies player as Lucknow Supergiants secured him after making a whopping bid of Rs 16 crore. The day started with Harry Brook going to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13.25 crore. SRH also bought Mayank Agarwal for Rs 8.25 crore. Among the surprise millionaires, pacer Shivam Mavi was picked by Gujarat Titans for Rs 6 crore while Mukesh Kumar was picked by Delhi Capitals for Rs 5.50 crore. The 40-year-old Amit Mishra was picked for Rs 50 lakh by Lucknow Supergiants.
Earlier, former Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson was sold to champions Gujarat Titans while Sunrisers Hyderabad, who started the day with the largest purse among the franchises, snapped up Harry Brook for a whopping 13.25 crore as well as former Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal for 8.25 crores.
Out-of-favour India batter Ajinkya Rahane was sold at his base price of Rs 50 lakh to Chennai Supper Kings, the only bidder for the player. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan went to KKR. West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder was sold to Rajasthan Royals for Rs 5.75 crore.
Speaking exclusively on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Live – Auction Special’, Sam Curran spoke on how excited he is to join the Punjab Kings and how overwhelmed he is with his price tag, he said, “I didn’t sleep much last night, was a bit excited, also nervous about how the auction was going to go. But yeah, absolutely overwhelmed and incredibly humbled that I managed to get what I did. I never had any expectations to receive that. Obviously, going back to where it all started for me in the IPL with Punjab, where I did my debut season four years ago. So, to be going back there seems fantastic and I am looking forward to joining a few English team mates as well.”
